Key West artists were invited to participate in “Raw Material,” a one-night “raw and uncensored” exhibit organized in a large abandoned shrimping warehouse on Stock Island in 1995. The theme was sex. I created a collection of 20 found–object assemblages combined with Polaroid’s. As a gay artist living in Key West during the height of the AIDS epidemic, this would be the perfect vehicle to explore the forbidden topic of gay sex and culture at the time in a very personal way. Many of the photographs are self –portraits, putting myself “out there” in ways I never thought I could. Inspired by out gay artists Robert Mapplethorpe and David Wojnarowicz, who had both succumbed to AIDS and whose art was both graphic and personal, I summoned the creative courage to tackle this still “taboo” subject.
