Beneath the Surface: Digging Deeper

May 1, 2014 By John Rankine 1 Comment

Beneath the Surface is a continued series of work combining found objects photographed in simple settings using mostly natural light. These still lives are my attempt to reveal some of life’s underbelly.

I have always been fascinated by objects – old, worn, often discarded things that I’d find, pair, and meticulously arrange, even as a child.

With my life-long passion in found-object assemblage and my eight-year stint as a photojournalist, these two mediums melded in what felt to be an organic progression.

“Beneath the Surface, Digging Deeper” is a continued series of work. These recent photographs, combined with prose, are my repeated attempt to breathe symbolic life into the inanimate.

The goal – to tell a story in its simplest form, using words and camera in a minimalist way, to explore life’s not-so-hidden underbelly.
